September is proving to be the year's biggest month for smartphones and other mobile devices, with manufacturers battling for public attention and shelf space in the run-up to the holiday season. [...] it takes place against a backdrop of escalating conflict between many of the biggest device makers, as patent and copyright disputes threaten to make some popular products unavailable in the U.S. and elsewhere. [...] the attention paid to all these products devices will likely pale next to the 800-pound gorilla of mobile devices: the next iteration of Apple's hugely profitable iPhone, which is expected to be revealed Wednesday in San Francisco. Manufacturers appear to be racing to show off their new flagship devices ahead of the iPhone's release, which if true to form will dominate headlines for several days before and after the event. Ultimately, though, no single feature is likely to woo consumers as strongly as the suite of software and services built into the phones' respective operating systems, analysts said. Apple won a significant victory in federal court last month when a jury ruled that Samsung infringed on multiple patents related to Apple's mobile devices.
